Gran Avenue Residence

Homewood, Alabama

Inspired by English Arts and Crafts cottages, the intimate nature of this family residence carries through the interiors with a warm palette of natural materials.

Limewashed brick walls outside turn to soft white walls inside with a paint washed wood ceiling overhead. Chamfered plaster arches create gentle thresholds between rooms and frame views of sculptural elements at each end of the family gathering spaces. Strength anchors one end of the home with a wide plaster fireplace while elegance in the plaster hood over the range balances the other end. The kitchen is composed of antique white oak cabinetry that complements the Olympian white marble countertop and backsplash. A planked wood ceiling supported by oak beams draw your eye to the plaster hood with a soft white finish that eases downward to the marble slab walls and countertops. A large center island topped with 2” thick walnut sits in front of an expansive east-facing window wall and welcomes in the soft morning light. A farmhouse sink with polished nickel faucet sits beneath smaller windows facing west, drawing in the warm afternoon light. Natural light floods the interior of the kitchen while looking outward to a private courtyard lawn.
