ASCEND
Birmingham, AL
ASCEND – Big Oak Ranch is a 2.32-acre transitional housing community along the Highway 280 corridor in Birmingham, Alabama, designed to support young adults ages 18–24 as they move from high school into higher education or career pathways. Conceived as more than housing, the project establishes a safe, structured environment where residents can cultivate independence, confidence, and a sense of belonging during a pivotal stage of life.
The project transforms a complex social need into a cohesive architectural response that merges form, program, and purpose. ASCEND departs from conventional multifamily housing by embracing a distributed village typology that prioritizes human scale and neighborhood familiarity. The program is thoughtfully organized into a composition of townhomes, multifamily buildings, and a centrally positioned clubhouse, creating a clear spatial hierarchy that balances privacy with community engagement.
This intentional fragmentation of massing fosters identity and ownership while encouraging organic social interaction. The built environment becomes an active participant in residents’ personal development; supporting growth, independence, and connection through design.
ASCEND Birmingham ultimately elevates residential architecture into a framework for empowerment, where community and environment work together to shape future opportunity.
