11 Bonita
Homewood, Alabama
The 11 Bonita residence is a 4062 SF extensive renovation located in the historic Spanish revival neighborhood of Hollywood in Homewood, Alabama.
Outwardly, this house gracefully stands in-line with the quirky yet elegant Spanish Dames of Bonita Drive. Inwardly, the house is a reflection of its eclectic owners – one, an avid collector of beautiful things; the other, a closet modernist. This blend of context and personality defies any one style; it simply aspires to be timeless and elegant. As a result, the house proper continues in a traditional style while the master suite addition introduces a warm modern glass box situated in the private rear garden court.
The old house was a dated reflection of the compartmentalized living necessary for climate control, complete with remote servant kitchen and long halls. To increase the usefulness of the house, we gutted and rearranged the spaces to support the modern way we live today. The hearth of the house features a period living room overlooked by the new elevated kitchen. A 16-foot copper skylight fills the kitchen with warm morning light. The daily entrance from the motor court brings you into a glass china room visible from both street and garden court.
Below that is a cozy viewing room and wine cellar. The master suite reflects a cleaner restrained feel. Perimeter drapes close to transform the glass bedroom into a sleeping chamber and the glass wall of the master bath open to the side yard “steel garden”. A friendly front porch looks to a simple terraced yard. And finally, a corner greeting bench gives a little something back to the neighborhood pedestrians.
